Nobel Forum, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm
The discovery of immunoglobulin Fc binding to the staphylococcal surface protein A by Forsgren and Sjöqvist in 1966 heralded new aspects of host-parasite relations and led to many other discoveries in this area as well as progress in methodological developments. Scandinavian scientists have played a major role in these endeavours. Some of the key players in the field have come together at this symposium to tell the stories of their own research, from the early days to the present time, each scientist with a speciic profile and each one with a solid international reputation. This provides unique insights into early receptin research.
The field of antimicrobial susceptibility testing also has a solid Scandinavian basis, a research area with important implications in laboratory service for the health care systems. From involvement in microbiology diagnostics in the 1970:s, methods of antimicrobial susceptibility testing became a focus for further research. Scientists in this field have joined the symposium to share their stories about the spread of new ideas, first in Europe and later also on the international stage.
It is a great privilege to host the speakers of this symposium and to present a pre-printed report by these authors. They have contributed greatly to science and by these presentations they have also added to the historical documentation of some important Scandinavian discoveries.
